Background
The oldest son of the Erebian emperor, Theophanes was born into luxury, yet he and his family took great pains to ensure it didn’t go to his head. He was rigorously disciplined when younger, as he was the one who had the expectation of taking his father’s place as ruler when his father passed on.

He was well-educated, his mother having seen to get him the finest education he could possibly get, and excelled in the scholarly environment. Particularly interested in philosophy and theology, he tried to emphasize those aspects of his education, though he was by no means ‘bad’ at any subject. When he was thirteen, his mother insisted he begin military training, thinking such knowledge would be essential for his rule. He did not like the idea, but he agreed.

Five years later, he finally decided to stop, thinking he’d seen enough skirmishes. It was then he returned to his two favourite subjects, confining himself in a monastery for two years to more adequately study theology. When he emerged, it was not long before he was off again, this time to Earth. Although he’d received a fine education for his country, he wanted more and made the controversial move of studying at a university of Earth; settling in England for six years with the assistance of the Selenians, he studied at Oxford, attaining a D.Phil. in Politics. Before he could do anything further, he was finally summoned home by his mother.

When he was twenty-eight, he was introduced to Ruth Kendrick, whose mission he only knew vaguely about; she was bold and outspoken, yet quite friendly, and he found himself struck by her. He tried to get to know her during her stay, curious even though she was only sixteen at the time, but she soon left. Two years passed by until Theophanes finally got around to contacting her again; she was slightly older now and so he felt a little more secure in trying to talk to her. He finally moved to Selene for a brief period, the closest to Earth his mother would allow him, and finally, when he was thirty-one, married Ruth.

He could tell his new father-in-law, who was only six years older, was somewhat suspicious of the age gap between the two, but Theophilos had seen larger gaps. For six years they remained married, until Ruth’s contract forced her to return to Earth. Knowing that her absence would spark bad things in the court, they reluctantly divorced, with the lack of children being given as the official reason; he guessed that if they appeared to be over, there would be less of a threat to her than if they had stayed married. His mother was the only thing stopping him from moving to Earth with her; all the time he’d spent away from home worried her, and with his father in declining health she didn’t want to risk anything.

In 1999 he was coroneted, but despite his extensive education, controlling the court was like herding cats, and he grew immensely frustrated. It was during this period that he regretted divorcing Ruth, but continued to slog on, hoping her contract would end quickly. It proved not to, and he abdicated about three years prior, to his mother’s fury. He has not given a reason publicly, but appears to enjoy the freedoms he has gained.
